Each dog that enters our lives is with us for a reason, we just may not what that reason was until after they have left us.
Some dogs are with us for a full life, some leave us way too soon, and some leave us somewhere in between. But they each have taught us valuable lessons.
Daisy was our first. She earned FOUR AKC Master Agility Championships, qualified for multiple AKC National Agility Championships and attended two, and attended 1 AKC Agility Invitational. Beyond her successes in the agility ring, she was queen of the house. She was spunky, sweet and chose her people very carefully.

Racer was our second Toller. Born in 2009, he was Daisy’s nephew. We were so excited to bring him home. But, at 7 ½ months old, he was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease called Steroid Responsive Meningitis (SRMA). At the time, there was very little known about SRMA in the US. We treated them best we could. But he succumbed to complications from this disease at 22 months old. His gift was that he helped many others learn from the knowledge we gained while treating his SRMA. Racer was very sweet; but he taught us about investigating the holistic approach to care, minimal vaccines, and the appropriate timing for vaccines.

Huckleberry was our third and arrived 6 months after Racer’s passing. As much as Daisy changed the trajectory of our lives, so did Huckleberry. Huck was bigger than life in a tiny little 30 pound, 16 ½ furball. The joie de vivre could not be contained-literally: he hated crates. But he loved to learn and to work with a 0-100 in seconds mentality. He taught me a lot in agility, including how to set goals and enjoy successes. Huckleberry beat the odds by beating a peripheral nerve sheath cancerous tumor on his spine at the age of 5 ½. After that, there were very few rules except for learning about canine rehabilitation.
